In the fantastic James Cameron movie, Avatar, the Nav’i (the native people of the planet Pandora, where the movie takes place) greet one another by saying “I see you”. When they say this, they are not referring to being able to visually and physically see one anther. Used in this way, the words mean “I see Who You Are. I see INTO you, THROUGH you and ALL of you … I Accept You and I Love You Unconditionally.”
When I saw this movie (both time), tears streamed down my face as this message touched my heart on an extremely deep level. And even though there are other messages in this stunningly beautiful film, the message of Love and Being Accepted For Who You Are, had the most profound impact on me. Through this one phrase, the Nav’i are able to communicate that, despite disagreements, mistakes and misunderstandings, the Power of Love, Total Acceptance, Forgiveness and Trust overcomes all. I walked out of the theatre feeling like a transformed person, a better person.
If you haven’t already, go see this unforgettable movie. I promise you won’t regret it!

The Words We Choose To Use Or NOT Use Do Make A Difference.
I have always admired people who have the gift of seeming to always say the right thing at the right time. I, unfortunately, have not historically been one of those people. I have put my foot in my mouth more times than I care to admit. Ask anyone in my family! My heart is in the right place, but somehow my tongue does not always cooperate … not even when I’m just talking to myself. I can be my own best cheerleader or most destructive critic and sabateur.
That might be one reason why videos are such a challenge for me. At least with videos, there is always the option of “delete” … not so in the real world. And I’m certain that this is one of the reasons why the Avatar message of Love and Total Acceptance struck such a profound chord in my heart.
That being said, I’m working on improving my communication skills: Working on re-aligning my internal dialogue to match my highest aspirations; working on reprograming my thought-habits so that choosing the best, most supportive and appropriate words to speak to myself and to others comes naturally. I’ve made enormous progress over the years but I know I’ve still got work to do. I apologize for any toes I have stepped on in the past and promise to do better in the future!
How To Transform The Inner Dialogue
We are living in a world that is all-too-often defined by massive volumes of information … too many words! Unless we choose to consciously “unplug”, we are in potential overload/overwhelm situations continuously throughout each day. And yet the power we each have to do just that – to consciously unplug from the chaos of the world, is one of the most unique things that we as human beings have the capacity to do. It gives us the opportunity to actually alter our own minds!
Although it is not possible to completely control our environments, it is 100% within each individual’s power to choose how to respond to any given situation. Think about it! Isn’t it fantastic and amazing that you have the power to completely transform any given situation into an opportunity for something good, something positive and life-enhancing?
As far as I have been able to determine, all of the truly great men and women throughout history have made time each day for meditation or prayer. In modeling that practice, I have found that, beginning and ending each day with some form of meditation really helps. Since I have a tendency toward a “jumpy-mind/overwhelm” syndrome, when I take the time to calm my mind, listen to my inner voice and read or listen to the wisdom of minds greater than my own, I am better prepared to handle the challenges of the day.
I encourage you to give it a try … even if you only have five minutes at a time between calls, at a stoplight, before you get up in the morning, before falling asleep … remember to breathe. In and Out. Do it now and feel a sense of calm and inner peace wash over you.
You also might want to try reading or listening to the inspirational words of great minds. The list of possibilities is as long as your imagination. Here is one brief excerpt from a little book by Julia Cameron (Heart Steps):
THE UNIVERSE RESPONDS TO MY DREAMS AND NEEDS
There is a unity flowing through all things. This unity is responsive to our needs. Unity responds and reacts to our positive spoken word. We are co-creative beings working with – and within -a larger whole. We embrace and contain this Source, which embraces and contains us. Drawing upon this Inner Source, we have an unlimited supply.
So go ahead: Have a wonder-full day! And remember to treat yourself with the same loving kindness that you would extend to your 5-year-old child-Self (ever see the movie, Kid, with Bruce Willis?). Soon you will observe how that feeling overflows into all areas of your life. Loving and accepting yourself is the first step to truly loving and accepting others and attracting good energy, good relationships and positive outcomes into your life. Take time to breathe and remember to choose the words you use with care. Namaste.
I SEE YOU,
Buff Elting

I see you too Buff
I appreciate the advice of taking time to calm the mind. It is a lesson I all to often forget, and the breath you asked me to take did indeed bring an inner calm immediately. Thank you.

PS – Avatar was AWESOME – visually, spiritually, and emotionally (at least).

Isnt’ it amazing how we frequently “know” what to suggest to others and all too often forget how to do those same, empowering things for ourselves? That’s the beauty of friendship! Thank you for your thoughtful comments … keep breathing!

Buff,
These are words of wisdom for sure. It is so important for all of us to watch our “self talk” and be conscious of what we say and how we say it! Great post!

Hi Buff,
This post really touched my heart. I have a history of feeling unseen, so your suggestions for positve self-talk are really helpful.
You have a kind and gentle heart.

HI Nancy, I have a feeling that lots of people feel “unseen”. It’s been exciting to me to witness how many parents of our generation have been making a more concerted effort to “see” and listen to their children … creating a world of entirely new possibilities for our children’s generation.

“…consciously unplug from the chaos of the world.” I like this concept. Difficult to do though – who leaves home without their cell? Commercial interests have been very successful in conditioning us to think the chaos is normal.

I know…this is so hard to do…I’m guilty of staying too plugged in myself. But I can see the value of regularly disengaging and it seems like a worthy goal to head in that direction. Thank for your comment, Steve. I really appreciate hearing from you!
Best wishes,
Buff

Wow, this is powerful. Thoughts are things for sure and when you think about it, everything we are right now, every situation we’re in is a product of our inner dialogue, whether we want to admit it or not.
It’s sometimes really hard to stop the broken record that plays over and over again, but it just must be done or our lives will never change.
This was one of the hardest things for me to learn, as I WAS a chronic “stinkin’ thinkin’” person. I think I actually had myself convinced that if I carried out a negative situation in my head over and over again it was paying back the person who I was reliving the movie about.
Really??? Were did that line of thinking come from?
Buff, this is a great post and has more wisdom in it every time you read it.
Thanks!

HI Debbie, Thanks so much for your thoughtful and honest comment. It is crazy, isn’t it, how we can carry thoughts around with us for so long , thinking they are true just because we internally “say so”!
It’s so liberating when we finally realize how much power we have to alter the trajectory of our own lives, down to the microscopic level.
Congratulations on freeing yourself from the “tyranny of negative mindset” (“stinkin’ thinkin’). The sky’s the limit from here on out!
