“5 Simple Steps To Dramatically Readjust Your Financial Thermostat“

When was the last time you checked the settings on your Financial Thermostat?

Didn’t know you had one? Don’t worry … you’re not alone!

I’d never heard of that type of “gauge” either until I attended Marie Forleo’s Rich, Happy and Hot LIVE in NYC recently. There was an absolute bonanza of cutting-edge information pouring like honey from every featured speakers and many of the participants as well – during this EPIC event (more on that in a later post).

One of the things that really lodged in my brain was the concept of a Financial Thermostat. HUH? Turns out there are some very basic questions you can ask yourself to help you re-align that very critical (but often hidden) part of your brain.

First of all, begin with a sense of playfulness.

I’ve heard it said that the difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is often only a matter of a few inches, a few degrees. Leaders and winners simply don’t give up …. they persevere and compel themselves to move beyond the mark and off the charts. If you put a kettle of water on the stove over a low flame, it will get hot. Yes, that’s a certainty.

BUT, if you raise the temperature enough to bring that water to a boil, you actually create an almost magical transformation … liquid water gets so excited by the additional heat that it is transformed into steam – a completely different substance! WOW!!! I know you weren’t expecting a science lesson here, but when you think about it, isn’t that pretty amazing? And when you think about it further, as a life lesson, you’ll begin to see how this grade-school science experiment can be applied to life in countless ways.

So, let’s get started… it’s time to Turn Up the Heat on your Financial Thermostat!

#1   Where IS Your FINANCIAL THERMOSTAT?

How do you respond to money issues? What comes of for you when it’s time to pay the bills, choose a restaurant entry, decide on where to go/what to do on date night? How about grocery shopping? Clothes shopping? Gift-giving ideas (and follow-through)?

#5  “YOUR CHALLENGE … TURN UP THE HEAT”

Go ahead and dare yourself to “step off the ladder”. So what if adjusting your Financial Thermostat is an ongoing project? I think you’ll have to agree with me that, just like with the heat in your home, it’s well worth the effort. In the long run and short, you’ve really got everything to gain!

Since we’re on the subject, here’s a brief personal story from my own life as a parent …

I have two sons. Due to life circumstances, we were a nuclear family of three for more than half of their “growing up” years. Being a single parent was an enormous challenge, but also a phenomenal opportunity to grow as an individual and to form a uniquely beautiful and lasting bond with my children that is very different than it would have been otherwise.

For instance, every time I thought maybe I had things figured out and I understood pretty much what I needed to do to be the best possible parent …. they’d change. You know how kids are! They’re always growing and evolving! And that meant I had to as well.

So I’d say to them: “Hey guys, I’ve never done this job before – (being a parent)- and I’m doing the best I can. This (whatever it was at the moment) is all new to me, but if we stick together, then we can do anything! So help me on this one, please.“

I can look back now and see that there was some kind of MAGIC in that approach. We developed the kind of open and trusting communication that every child (and parent) needs and deserves …. and it worked.

I gave them options when it was appropriate and tried to set appropriate boundaries where they were needed. And my sons grew strong and kind and independent and wise. Together we were a team that was able to take on anything that came at us with courage, resilience and love; growing and learning from each other. Today, my sons are my best, most trusted friends and I am a profoundly proud of them both. They continue to be sources of inspiration in all areas of my life.

Raising children is an awe-some responsibility – arguably it’s more demanding and important than any other job in the world. It teaches us lessons that can be applied to everything else in our lives. Good thing it also gives us the most astonishing and effective on-the-job training – in the world!

As we strive to provide leadership for our children, we are preparing them to be the next leaders, instilling in them all the inspiration and creativity we possibly can, along with every other admirable quality we can muster … like honesty, integrity, courage, strength, intellectual curiosity, appreciation for nature, respect for self and others. The list goes on and on, and the questions and challenges never cease.

Whether you have children or not, you have undoubtedly had an impact on the lives of someone’s children.
