“Going for Gold” … are you familiar with that powerful feeling of giving your best? Of being on the cutting edge, of “going for gold”? When you want it so much you can taste it! (whatever “it” is). Smell it! See it! Feel the goosebumps of anticipation and excitement rising along our arms! Like a burst of amazing flavor as you pull apart a plump and brilliant orange … that sublime spark of juicy, energetic life! Wow!
And sometimes, attaining your personal best is just as satisfying and fantastic as being first. Just promise yourself one thing … that once you have your dream in your sights, you will Never Give Up!
I made this little video especially for you today, to inspire you to reach for your own personal best.
Is “Going for Gold” part of YOUR life yet?Watching the Olympics over the past 17 days, I’ve been reminded of the intensity and extreme commitment that high-performance sports requires from each individual. You see it in their faces. And not just the faces of the medal winners … everyone who makes it to the Olympics is already a champion, already at the top of their game. I have total admiration for each one of those young athletes. But the ones who do stand on the top step … the ones who are so phenomenally well-prepared and fine-tuned … there really is something special that sets them apart.
Consider Shaun White: Did you catch his final performance in the half-pipe? He won before he even took his second ride … that’s how great he is. Not only that, but in his finale, he chose – just for the joy of it – to show us his newest, awe-inspiring trick – the one he’d been holding like an ace-up-his-sleeve as his final competitive edge. It was unbelievable! Far beyond anything anyone else has ever even tried to do … and he laid it down with ease, grace and absolute JOY! He LOVES snowboarding. His passion and enthusiasm are contagious and NO ONE doubts for a second that he deserves to wear the gold!.
Champion Mindset
Do you have what it takes to go for gold? Chances are good that you do… and the fastest way to get there is to develop a championship mindset. It doesn’t matter what it is. Incorporate these principles into your daily life, so that you can begin to really live the life you dream of:
- Passion
- Commitment
- Self-Confidence
- Sacrifice
- Gratitude
It All Starts With A Dream
So, if your intention is to excel (and if you’re reading this, then it probably is), then this is where it all begins:
1. Visualize your dream
2. Set your goals
3. Build on existing talents and skill sets
4. Master the ones you need to reach your particular vision
5. Learn to turn inevitable setbacks into inspirational energy to catapult yourself to the winner’s circle.
6. Love what your do! Be Passionate!!!
7. Believe in Yourself … and Never Give Up!
The Shared Analogies of Sports and Business
I love the way sports and business share so many of the same analogies. Personally, I tend to gravitate toward athletic pursuits that require individual, as opposed to team, effort – but there, no matter what the sport is, there coaching plays an important role … and business is the same way. Everything I know about my favorite sports and my business life I have learned from being coached, from watching those with more experience and skill, from working side-by-side with peers, and then by plodding along at my own ever-changing pace to practice and improve until I could keep up with my mentors and start really having fun.
You’ve got what it takes … just get out of your own way, tear down the obstacles in your path and Go For Gold! I wish you all the very best as you reach for the top. I believe in you!
READY, SET, GO!!!

Buff…success at that level truly takes intentional steps toward the direction in which you want to go. I have been in the position of training for the Olympics (I injured myself just a few weeks before the trials so never was able to realize those dreams) and it takes absolute focus and commitment. I trained with World Record holders and Olympic Champions and they absolutely loved what they did and were completely sold out to their endeavors. Many world class athletes need to overcome intense setbacks as well…but their drive and passion help them persevere through it all. It definitely takes a certain mindset to become successful in any area of life and I certainly appreciate the post…thanks a ton!

HI Bruce,
Thanks for your comments…they are greatly appreciated. My husband had a similar experience as yours
only he was training the year the US boycotted (1980) the games. But that training and mindset of a champion really stayed with him and it’s a great thing to share together.
I love sports analogies and have deep admiration for all the athletes, gold-medal winners or not, who endure and persevere and never give up. I can tell you have the heart of a champion!

Buff,
Thank you for the inspiration Buff. I too considered my business goals quite a lot while watching the Olympics. The years of sacrifice, determination, confidence building, fundamentals, financial investments, etc all for a chance at gold. You have to admire that, and I choose to emulate it.
As you said, each of those things apply to the path of an entrepreneur and the rewards speak for themselves.
Goin’ for Gold!

Yes Buff! Confidence is important but we don’t want to become egotistical individuals
Passion, commitment, confidence, sacrifice, and gratitude!
I can say I have all five and that’s why I’m on my way to achieving the gold! That’s my confidence talking.
Thanks for reminding us to include these key elements in our lives, Buff. These five areas are crucial not only in business but in our relationships as well as all other areas of our lives.

Shaun White had something else, something we all need – unwavering support of someone who believed in him. He had a terrible accident that would cause most parents to encourage their child into other endeavours. But Shaun’s mom helped her son heal and get back out there. When asked why, she said he loves it and and I love him.
If you don’t already have someone in your corner, go find someone. When added to the above list, you’ve got the whole shebang!

Thank you, Jodi, for adding that about Shaun White. I’d forgotten about that critical piece of his story…
though not sure how I did. Supporting and encouraging my own 2 sons has been a “lifetime” story
in itself. I’m very luck to have them as well as my dear husband and others as well – who sit in my
corner and cheer me on. My wish is for everyone to have the gift of loving & creative support!

What a timely post! I love the way you’ve taken the concept of Olympians and pointed out that we all can succeed in any area of life when we use these winning principles.
So many people are not willing to make sacrifices in their lives, yet they wonder why they’re broke and unhappy (actually, in many cases they manage to find someone or something to blame…). Those of us who are willing to do what needs to be done will reach the gold, whether it be fortune, freedom, or self fulfillment.

That’s definitely a powerful way to connect with self and sacrifice in the short term for the
long term benefit. I wish you all the best of luck with it and look forward to hearing how
awesome you feel when it’s over…and along the way.

Buff – First, I want to echo some of the others and let you know that I love your writing style. It is captivating, a reflection of your personality.
I cannot begin to express how much this message resonates with me. You hit on so many of the things I try to instill in both my Pop Warner Football players, as well as those entrepreneurs I coach and mentor. The bottom line is the same. When you apply these principals to any aspect of your life, you will be amazed by what you can accomplish!
