River Time
OK, I guess it’s the mother in me …. but I have to share a piece of my week with you and it comes with a very important message! In fact, this may be the best piece of advice you’ve gotten all week, so don’t go away … I promise to keep it brief.
Here it is … no matter how important your work load is, no matter how many demands are on your time, please, I’m pleading with you … take some time off to do something non-work related/some personal time to relax. Read, nap, go play with a friend (animals count!). Just take time away from the computer, away from your desk, your kitchen, your chores, your taxes. Here are three reasons why you should follow my advice:
- You deserve it! Plain and simple …. I could stop right there and that would say it all. You work hard and you know it. How great would it be to have some real time for yourself. Of course, you might already be really good at this. If so, I am really proud of you! If not, read on …
- Pushing harder is not necessarily going to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself. Did you know that it’s actually impossible to ever work “hard enough”? If you’re anything like me, than you’ve grown up with a “hard work will make it better” attitude. And I’m not knocking hard work – it definitely has it’s place! But taking some personal time off, especially with the intention of truly “letting go”, will allow you to return to your work with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
- Take that time-off on YOUR schedule! OK, this one brings us to the actual inspiration for writing to you today. This week, I was diagnosed with tendonitis in my right thumb and wrist. Ouch!!! Plus, I woke up one morning with a sore throat and feeling really crummy. Bummer! This is NOT a convenient time to be injured or ill. But is there every a time that is? Remember when you were a kid and sometimes you just needed a day off from school, even though you loved school and all your friends? If your mom was anything like mine, just taking a day off didn’t really fly.
So I’d pretend to be sick … I actually got really creative a few times as a 7-year-old. Two of my favorite tricks: scribbling on the wood floor in a big circle with different colors that I was sure would convince Mom I had puked (that one didn’t go over too well) and putting the thermometer against the light bulb and then quickly back into my mouth while she wasn’t looking (more effective). I’m sure you get the point – I just needed a break from my normal routine and I was willing to act sick to get it.
These days, I’m the one in charge of when I take breaks, or don’t. And guess what, I’m not always very good at it. I rarely get sick and I’m really good at powering through pain. However, every once in a great while, I get a cold that forces me to rest a little more. OR, I sustain an injury, such as the tendonitis in my right hand that I’m dealing with now. It’s a clear case of repetitive motion abuse to my hand. Maybe I just needed a break from spending so much time on the computer? The best way to heal it is with rest, ice and more rest! (That’s why I’m keeping this SHORT!). I must admit, I’m really enjoying taking a little extra time off for reading and visiting with some long-neglected friends over the next few weeks. Why not make the most of it as long as I have to follow “doctor’s orders”! But trust me, in the meantime, I’m devising a whole new plan for my work day.
And that’s what I wanted to emphasize to you! I know you’ve heard it before from other sources (maybe even your own mom), but here it is again. Whatever you are doing in your life, chances are you are working long hours these days trying to take care of a million different things in your life. Do yourself a huge favor and be kind to YOU. Be your own best friend and loving parent. Step away from the computer! Put on some music, dance around. Sit quietly and watch your breath go in and out for 5 minutes. Go for a walk. Take a cat-nap. Call a friend. Make some tea and sit in the sun for a few minutes. Every day … take time for you. You just might save yourself the pain and inconvenience of a compromise to your physical health. It’s time to organize your life in such a way that personal time-off is a priority that you honor consistently. No matter how overwhelming your life seems, keep in mind that being sick or injured will make it that much more difficult! You are truly amazing but we are all human, after all!
If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging. ~ Will Rogers
Have a great weekend and be sure to take some personal time! Be KIND to YOU!!! You have my permission…
Love and Light,
Buff Elting

I fully agree, Buff! We sometimes (most of the time for me) forget that what we’re doing is for our families. We get super excited and enthused in the moment of our work that we don’t even remember that we have a life outside of the computer, etc…
Thanks for the reminder that we need to refresh our mind, body and soul.

Thanks for your comment Jackie. I know for sure that taking care of myself is often the hardest thing to do … but remembering the importance of staying healthy and strong so we can take care of our families is one of the best reasons I can think of to take care of ourselves! (and I always appreciate reminders from other women!)
To our Wealth and Health!

Hey Buff,
I love this post and thank you for sharing it with us. Right now I have been signed off work for 2 weeks with anxiety and stress related to my day job…the thought of it is giving me palpitations.
I work silly long hours for local Government, I am a mummy, I am a girlfriend and I am trying to be a successul online marketer…sound familiar.
I never saw the stress coming, I have always been healthy and my sickness record is second to none…my mind wasnt stressed but my body obviously felt otherwise.
At first I felt guilty for being off work while my colleagues have to pick up the pieces but then the doctor said something to me…she said you know what Beth you are ill and they arent, sometimes we all just need to get off the merry-go-round…theres no shame in it we are only human!! Amen. I could have kissed her lol.
I know soon I will be able to be full-time in my main passion but until then I am going to have to make sure I take the time to have a break. I would urge anyone reading your post to take it seriously because I genuinely never thought I would be the kinda person who was off work with stress but its a real thing and I wouldnt want anyone to feel the way I do right now.
I really like your blog, I look forward to reading more.
Yours in Success,

Beth Hewitt

Hi Buff,
Thanks for bringing this to light. I just learned recently that actively doing nothing could improve mental & physical health as well as relationships. Key points you already pointed out here such as “Read, nap, go play with a friend (animals count!)”
They said that the benefits includes contemplation, relaxation & reflection which in turn decrease stress and improve clarity.
Thank You Buff!!!
Also for your continued support and Love.
